Trump Dismisses Housing Legislation as 'Big Yawn' Amid Voting Rights Push

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which reached the president’s desk via House Speaker Mike Johnson, is set to become law automatically after 10 days if Trump takes no action. Despite its bipartisan nature, Trump canceled a planned signing ceremony, stating that compared to his push for the SAVE America Act—which mandates citizenship proof for voter registration—the housing bill holds little significance.

Democratic lawmakers were quick to denounce the characterization. Rep. Pramila Jayapal and others highlighted the disconnect between the president’s rhetoric and the financial realities of working families, with DNC rapid response director Kendall Witmer stating that Trump continues to prioritize his own political agenda over the needs of Americans. As midterm elections approach, the administration is pressuring Congress to attach the voter registration requirements to a reconciliation bill to bypass the 60-vote Senate threshold, despite warnings that the measures could disenfranchise millions of voters.
