Trump Abandons $1.8 Billion Political Slush Fund Under Pressure

The proposal aimed to utilize federal resources to support individuals prosecuted during the Biden administration, including participants in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. House Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly played a pivotal role in the decision, helping convince the president to abandon the scheme during a conversation on Monday. The move follows significant pushback from House Republicans and a series of legal setbacks, including federal court rulings that blocked fund disbursements.

Despite the reported reversal, Democratic lawmakers remain skeptical and are moving to cement the cancellation through legislation. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senators Elissa Slotkin, Adam Schiff, and Mark Kelly are spearheading efforts to permanently bar taxpayer money from reaching the president’s associates or convicted rioters. Advocacy groups, including Democracy Forward, maintain they will continue their court challenges until the administration provides formal assurance that the plan will not be resurrected. Meanwhile, activists warn that the demise of this specific fund should not distract from other contentious policies embedded within the broader budget reconciliation package.
