US Workers Demand Government Protection Against AI-Driven Job Losses

The poll, conducted by the Justice Research Group for Working Families Power, indicates that 62% of participants worry AI will directly impact their personal livelihoods or those of their families. Workers identified a wide range of vulnerable sectors, including trucking, retail, service, and administrative roles, while expressing concern for the future of education and healthcare support staff.

To counter these risks, respondents showed overwhelming support for legislative safeguards. Approximately 84% favor state-funded retraining for displaced workers, and 79% support mandates requiring companies to redistribute AI-generated productivity gains through higher wages and reduced working hours. Even a tax on firms that replace staff with automated systems garnered 69% approval.

These results provide legislative momentum for progressive lawmakers. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have already introduced a proposal for a moratorium on new data center construction until federal protections are established. Similarly, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Greg Casar have advocated for a tax on AI implementation to finance job transition programs, signaling a growing political push to prioritize labor stability over unchecked technological expansion.
