Coalition Urges Democrats to Block Fossil Fuel Immunity Bill

The push centers on the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026, introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Harriet Hageman. The proposed law aims to provide a legal buffer for companies involved in the extraction and production of energy, shielding them from liability for damages linked to their products. Proponents of the bill describe the measure as a necessary defense of American energy against what they term leftist legal crusades.

Critics, however, contend the legislation is part of a broader, coordinated campaign orchestrated by conservative interests, including ties to activist Leonard Leo, to insulate the industry from over 30 active lawsuits. These cases currently seek to hold corporations accountable for costs associated with coastal flooding, wildfires, and other climate-driven disasters. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and nine other Democratic state executives have joined the call for resistance, asserting that no industry should be granted a blanket exemption that overrides the legal authority of states to protect their residents.
