Former Ethereum Foundation researchers launch independent Ethlabs

The organization positions itself as a specialized research hub, operating independently of the Ethereum Foundation to tackle critical challenges such as settlement speed, network capacity, and cross-chain interoperability. Founding members include Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz Schilling, Josh Rudolf, and Julian Ma—all veterans of the Ethereum ecosystem. By securing long-term funding, these researchers intend to address the protocol’s evolving monetary design and the specific needs of tokenized assets.

Ethlabs maintains that its research agenda remains insulated from donor influence. While corporate backers like Bitmine and Sharplink provide the capital, an external grants administrator manages the distribution of funds. Under this governance model, contributors receive regular audits and performance reports but hold no authority over technical roadmaps or research priorities. This structure mirrors a growing trend within the Ethereum ecosystem, where development tasks are increasingly distributed among diverse, independent institutions. For supporters like Bitmine Chairman Tom Lee, the move reflects a strategic bet on the coming institutional supercycle, where public blockchains must handle a surge in financial activity and automated commerce.
