Base Preps Beryl Upgrade to Streamline Token Issuance and Withdrawals

The Beryl upgrade shifts token logic from traditional smart contracts to precompiled contracts within Base’s node software. By utilizing Rust-based execution, the new B20 standard allows issuers to deploy assets directly at the protocol level. These tokens remain compatible with existing ERC-20 wallets and exchanges while incorporating ERC-2612 permit functionality for signature-based authorizations. To accommodate regulated entities, Base included an Issuer Toolkit featuring granular controls for minting, burning, and asset freezing.

Beyond token standards, Beryl accelerates capital movement by reducing the standard withdrawal period from seven days to five. This change builds on the earlier Azul upgrade, which implemented Multiproofs to verify transactions. The update also integrates Reth V2, an optimization of the network's Rust-based execution client. This deployment aims to lower storage requirements and support higher block gas targets, ensuring the network remains performant as traffic scales. Following this release, the development team has already signaled a September target for the Cobalt upgrade, which is expected to introduce native account abstraction and protocol-level smart accounts.
