The California Billionaire Tax Act, an initiative spearheaded by the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, seeks a one-time 5% levy on roughly 200 billionaires. Proponents aim to secure 900,000 signatures to place the measure on the 2026 ballot, arguing the funds are essential to maintain healthcare access and emergency services amid federal funding cuts.
