Newsom Faces Backlash Over Opposition to California Billionaire Tax

The California Billionaire Tax Act, an initiative spearheaded by the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, seeks a one-time 5% levy on roughly 200 billionaires. Proponents aim to secure 900,000 signatures to place the measure on the 2026 ballot, arguing the funds are essential to maintain healthcare access and emergency services amid federal funding cuts. While public polling suggests broad support for the tax—including backing from over 90% of California Democrats—the Governor remains firmly opposed.

Newsom characterized the proposal as a threat to California’s economic stability, warning that such measures could stifle innovation and prompt an exodus of wealthy residents and startups. In a recent interview, he stated, "This will be defeated—there’s no question in my mind." This stance has drawn sharp criticism from activists and political figures who note that prominent billionaires, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, have expressed openness to the tax. Critics, such as civil rights attorney Alejandra Caraballo, have accused the Governor of acting as an "errand boy" for the ultra-wealthy, further highlighting the deepening rift between the Democratic establishment and its progressive wing.
