US Democrats Decry Trump Intervention in Colombia Election

The criticism follows Trump’s public endorsement of far-right candidate Abelardo De La Espriella, a defense lawyer who has vowed to "disembowel the left." In a post on Truth Social, the former president framed the June 21 election as a pivotal moment for bilateral relations, promising that a victory for De La Espriella would secure the full backing of the United States. Analysts at the Center for Economic and Policy Research suggest this endorsement carries an implicit threat: that voters may face punitive measures, including tariffs or sanctions, should they choose a candidate not aligned with Washington.

Republican figures, including Rep. María Salazar and Sen. Bernie Moreno, have joined the campaign, claiming De La Espriella has been vetted by U.S. officials. Meanwhile, incumbent President Gustavo Petro has urged Trump to refrain from meddling. Tensions have escalated further following reports that the U.S. government effectively blocked a planned meeting between Petro and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. State Department officials reportedly signaled that the event was unacceptable, leading Colombian authorities to interpret the warning as a potential threat of arrest based on existing visa restrictions against Petro.
