Jayapal Demands Accountability Following 50th Death in ICE Custody

According to ICE’s public records, the death count has reached 51, a figure that includes two individuals killed during a sniper attack on a Dallas processing center and at least 10 suicides. Critics attribute these fatalities to systemic understaffing and policy shifts that erode medical oversight. Tensions are escalating nationwide as detainees at facilities like Delaney Hall in New Jersey and the Adelanto Processing Center in California stage hunger strikes and labor protests against unsanitary conditions and poor care.

Congressional Oversight and Facility Failures

Jayapal, a vocal critic of the administration's immigration policies, recently highlighted a report from the DHS Inspector General that exposed severe code violations at the Winn Correctional Center in Louisiana. Despite these documented abuses, the Department of Homeland Security has shuttered the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman, stripping Congress of a key tool for investigating misconduct. In response, Jayapal has introduced the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act, which seeks to phase out for-profit detention centers and enforce stricter standards for the treatment of those held in federal custody.
