South Korea Holds Off on New Sanctions Over Massive Binance Hack

The Unification Ministry confirmed on November 5 that the government has not yet established the full circumstances of the theft. According to ministry officials, internal information-sharing between relevant agencies remains in the preliminary stages, preventing any immediate move toward punitive measures. This cautious approach contrasts with the FBI’s public identification of the attackers, an accusation Pyongyang has dismissed as a grave political provocation.

Despite the pause on Binance-specific actions, the Foreign Ministry continues to review broader measures against North Korean cyber operations. Spokesperson Park Doo-soon noted that Seoul is evaluating potential unilateral sanctions as part of ongoing security reviews. These efforts remain separate from established trilateral cooperation with the United States and Japan, which aims to curb illicit digital activities. Meanwhile, Binance reports that approximately $2.85 billion of the stolen assets have been frozen through industry-wide collaboration, even as investigators continue to trace the remaining funds across blockchain networks.
