Adam Back dismisses BIP-110 as failed attempt to override Bitcoin

The proposal, authored by developer Dathon Ohm, aimed to restrict non-financial data on the Bitcoin network by limiting transaction output scripts to 34 bytes. While supporters, including developer Luke Dashjr, argued that curbing such data would lower storage demands and protect Bitcoin’s utility as a payment network, critics viewed the move as a threat to the protocol's neutrality. The controversy culminated in a brief, unsuccessful blockchain split in August after the proposal failed to reach the required 55% miner signaling threshold, peaking at only 2.53%.

Recent data from November 3 highlights the marginal status of the initiative, with only eight observed nodes enforcing BIP-110 out of more than 18,800 monitored globally. With the proposal officially listed as closed, Back emphasized that the market's refusal to adopt the rules underscores the difficulty of overriding established consensus. He dismissed the technical justifications provided by proponents, suggesting that the underlying issue was a flawed attempt to force a change that the broader Bitcoin ecosystem had already rejected.
