UN Warns of Worsening Displacement Crisis as Gaza Territory Shrinks

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) describes the current situation as a chronic nightmare, noting that Israeli forces are pushing toward a stated goal of controlling 70% of Gaza's territory. This expansion is marked by the enforcement of a so-called yellow line, an invisible boundary treated as a kill zone where civilians face lethal threats. Recent military activity has triggered fresh waves of displacement in Al-Shujaiyeh, Gaza City, and parts of Middle Gaza, including Al-Bureij and Deir-al-Balah.

On October 25, an Israeli drone strike on an encampment near the yellow line in Al-Shujaiyeh ignited tents, displacing roughly 800 people, including many women and children. Ajith Sunghay, head of the OHCHR’s Palestine division, warned that most displaced families remain trapped in flimsy shelters as winter approaches, with no access to their homes. These findings coincide with a separate UN-mandated commission report accusing Israel of crimes against humanity, including extermination, within the occupied territories.
