Google Readies Institutional Crypto Custody Service for 2027

Google Readies Institutional Crypto Custody Service for 2027

The system relies on cryptographic techniques that split key control among several participants. Under this model, an institution might configure a policy requiring multiple approvals—such as two out of three or five out of seven—before a blockchain transaction is authorized. These shares can be distributed across a firm's internal servers, Google Cloud, or third-party providers, ensuring that no single point of failure compromises the entire asset pool.

This infrastructure integrates directly into Google’s Confidential Space, allowing institutions to enforce strict policies on destination addresses and transfer limits. By moving beyond traditional key management, the company seeks to mitigate risks highlighted by recent industry data; Chainalysis reports that private-key compromises accounted for nearly 44% of cryptocurrency thefts in 2024. While Alphabet already uses this technology to secure its own digital assets on Ethereum and Solana, the company has yet to identify the financial partners currently participating in private testing.

Google enters a competitive market currently dominated by specialized providers like Fireblocks and BitGo. Rather than requiring banks to surrender custody of their keys, the service offers a modular infrastructure intended to support ECDSA and Ed25519 signing. Although the company has signaled an intention to eventually incorporate post-quantum cryptography, no timeline for those upgrades exists. For now, the focus remains on providing a hardened, policy-driven environment for banks looking to maintain direct control over their digital asset operations.
