Crypto Industry Pours $176 Million Into Midterm Congressional Races

Fairshake and its affiliated political action committees account for the bulk of this capital, deploying $150.8 million through October 20. Backed by heavyweights including Andreessen Horowitz, the network operates by funding advertisements that often bypass digital asset policy entirely, focusing instead on broader issues like taxation and immigration. This strategy has proven effective in primaries, where 53 of the 58 candidates supported by the group secured victories.

The industry's primary objective remains the passage of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which would delineate regulatory boundaries between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Industry advocates argue that such legislation provides essential stability that executive branch policies lack. While House efforts remain largely bipartisan, Senate spending has increasingly skewed toward Republicans, particularly in high-stakes environments like Ohio.

Ohio’s Senate race has become a focal point, drawing over $68 million in crypto-related expenditures. Efforts there have centered on opposing former Senate Banking Committee chair Sherrod Brown, with the super PAC Defend American Jobs pouring millions into ads supporting Republican Jon Husted. However, this aggressive spending has drawn fire. In Illinois, candidates like La Shawn Ford have faced significant opposition, with some campaigns issuing cease-and-desist letters, alleging that the industry’s advertisements rely on defamatory claims to undermine those who advocate for stricter state-level registration requirements.
