Microsoft exits Essex AI site as grid constraints stall UK ambition

Peter Griffiths, chairman of Argyll Data Development, identifies electricity as the primary bottleneck for the sector. While the government has committed £600 million toward AI safety, Griffiths argues that the lack of immediate grid access renders large-scale ambition hollow. The Essex site, intended to support AI chip training and consumer services, remains stalled as Nscale searches for alternative energy sources to bypass the decade-long queue.

The issue extends beyond the Southeast. In Scotland, over 20 proposed hyperscale data centers are currently trapped in a connection backlog, despite the region's abundant wind and hydro power potential. Griffiths warns that without fast-track grid access for credible projects, the UK risks losing vital investment and high-tech jobs to more responsive international markets.

Meanwhile, the government is focusing on Manchester, where the NCSC is establishing an AI Cyber Security Centre of Excellence. This facility aims to leverage local academic research and live inference traffic from commercial data centers to stress-test security models. However, industry experts maintain that true sovereign capability requires more than research; it demands ironclad operational control. For regulated firms, security is not just about hardware, but the ability to demonstrate exactly where data resides and how systems perform under the pressure of potential supplier or power failures.
