Bank of Israel Rebuffs Netanyahu’s Crypto Sanctions Hedge

The tension surfaced after Netanyahu, speaking to Channel 10 on October 23, acknowledged the risk of banking sanctions amid mounting international pressure regarding Israeli policies in the West Bank. He confirmed he had requested preparations for an alternative financial system using blockchain. The Bank of Israel issued a sharp rebuttal the following day, asserting that cryptocurrencies are ill-equipped to circumvent sanctions and urging the government to prioritize maintaining commercial ties with major trading partners.

Netanyahu stood his ground in a subsequent interview with Channel 14, noting that while he values the central bank's input, he reserves the right to set national economic policy. Despite his insistence that crypto remains an option, the proposal lacks a defined implementation schedule, funding, or specific technological framework. The discourse has become a focal point of the lead-up to Israel’s October 27 parliamentary election, with opposition figures like Gadi Eisenkot and Avigdor Liberman dismissing the strategy as a threat to national security. Critics argue that public blockchain ledgers are inherently traceable, leaving them vulnerable to the same regulatory oversight that governs conventional financial institutions.
