Milei targets journalists following LIBRA case dismissal

The ruling, issued by Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi on Oct. 23, cleared Milei, his sister Karina, and nine other defendants of wrongdoing. The court cited Article 336 of the criminal procedure code, concluding that the events in question did not constitute a crime. Despite the favorable outcome, the President utilized social media to denounce Hugo Alconada Mon, Carlos Pagni, Paulino Rodríguez, Natalia Volosín, and Luis Novaresio. He characterized the media scrutiny as a politically motivated operation intended to destabilize his administration.

In his statement, Milei claimed that for one year, eight months, and nine days, he had been subjected to slander. While he praised the judiciary for resisting what he termed political and media pressure, his criticism of the press remained pointed. Journalist Hugo Alconada Mon, one of those named, noted in his reporting that the dismissal occurred even though certain investigative measures remained incomplete, including blockchain tracing that was hampered by a lack of specialized technical tools. Pedro Biscay of the Center for Research and Prevention of Economic Crime described the court's decision as premature, calling for a more comprehensive review of the project's collapse.

This domestic ruling follows a separate legal conclusion in the United States. In September, Judge Jennifer L. Rochon dismissed a class-action lawsuit involving the LIBRA token, rejecting claims against former CEO Benjamin Chow and other defendants. While the U.S. case focused on allegations of fraud and conspiracy, the Argentine proceedings concluded without the President or his associates ever being called for formal questioning.
