Millions Lose Food Aid as SNAP Cuts and Rising Costs Hit Families

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reports that these departures represent 13% of the program's total recipients. The impact is geographically uneven, with Arizona experiencing a 51% drop in participation. Other states, including Florida, Louisiana, and Texas, have seen caseloads plummet by 20% or more. In total, Texas leads the nation with over 709,000 fewer enrollees, while Florida and Arizona follow with significant losses. Analysts suggest that the legislation, which funded corporate tax breaks through deep social spending cuts, incentivized states to prioritize administrative cost-cutting over benefit delivery.

The Erosion of School Nutrition

Beyond household assistance, the policy shifts have crippled school meal programs. As federal reimbursements dwindle, districts are reporting ballooning lunch debt and a sharp reduction in universal free meal offerings. In San Antonio, the number of schools providing free meals to all students dropped from 48 to 16, while rural districts in Indiana report a massive decline in student eligibility. Senator Elizabeth Warren, citing a "Food Misery Index" from her office, notes that these combined factors have stripped $22 billion from American families since July 2025. Facing these gaps, food banks are struggling to manage the surge in demand as eligible families, particularly immigrants fearing citizenship repercussions, abandon the system entirely.
