Jameson Lopp Urges Bitcoin Holders to Keep Self-Custody

In an October 22 open letter, Lopp addressed a growing trend of Bitcoin holders shifting assets to centralized exchanges following high-profile wallet exploits. Recent incidents, including firmware configuration errors in Coldcard wallets and malicious hardware implants found in Southeast Asian resellers, have prompted many to question the viability of individual management. While these attacks are increasingly complex, Lopp maintains that the solution lies in more robust security architecture rather than surrendering custody.

Moving assets into exchange-traded funds or managed accounts removes the technical burden of private key protection but introduces new vulnerabilities. Investors lose the ability to verify their holdings independently and become subject to institutional policies, including potential asset freezes or government seizures. Lopp emphasizes that the core value proposition of Bitcoin remains its permissionless nature, which is fundamentally undermined when a third party controls the keys.

To mitigate risks, Lopp advocates for multisignature wallets that distribute authorization requirements across different geographic locations and hardware manufacturers. By diversifying security setups, users can ensure that a single point of failure—whether a hardware bug or a user error—does not result in total fund loss. He encourages holders to rigorously audit their security stacks and plan for long-term access, including inheritance, rather than seeking the false sense of safety provided by traditional financial intermediaries.
