Israeli Military Map Contradicts Claims of Restricted Area Entry

The Israel Defense Forces and the Foreign Ministry initially stated that the group required prior coordination to harvest in the area. However, documents distributed to local farmers by the Civil Administration show the location did not require such authorization. Lander, the Democratic nominee for New York's 10th Congressional District, was released after three hours with a warning, while other members of the group—including activists and Rabbis for Human Rights—remained in custody.

Critics argue the detention highlights a systemic policy of dispossession. Palestinian activist Ihab Hassan dismissed the government’s claim that the visit was a publicity stunt, asserting that the military’s own documentation proves no violation occurred. The incident coincides with an increasingly violent harvest season; the United Nations reports that Israeli settlers carried out 199 attacks linked to the harvest between September 1 and October 12, resulting in over 2,500 damaged trees and numerous injuries. Peace Now, an Israeli advocacy group, characterized the military’s restrictive measures as a pretext for enabling the expansion of illegal outposts while denying Palestinians access to their own land.
