The collaboration aims to determine if visitors can utilize yen-denominated stablecoins through payment cards while maintaining the user experience of traditional financial products. Beyond card-linked transactions, the partners will evaluate wallet-to-wallet transfers and implement anti-money-laundering and fraud detection controls. Although the project remains at a proof-of-concept stage, it addresses a significant market corridor: more than 10.1 million travelers moved between Japan and South Korea during the first eight months of 2026.
Expanding Cross-Border Financial Infrastructure
Beyond consumer spending, the companies are investigating whether stablecoins can streamline commercial settlement between Korean and Japanese businesses. This work involves assessing the XDC Network node ecosystem and exploring potential integrations with existing international remittance frameworks. While Shinhan Card and the SBI subsidiaries have yet to announce a commercial launch date, the trial builds upon Shinhan’s previous experiments with digital assets and SBI’s established regulatory experience in handling electronic payment instruments. The partners have not yet specified which stablecoin issuer will support the pilot, nor have they disclosed the mechanics of currency conversion for merchants.
