Crypto Exchanges Pivot to Prediction Markets as Trading Volumes Stall

The expansion signals a strategic shift for platforms like Coinbase, Gemini, and Bullish, which are struggling to maintain revenue as spot cryptocurrency trading volumes dropped 18% over the same period. By diversifying into contracts tied to sporting events, political outcomes, and economic decisions, these exchanges hope to retain users who have grown weary of the volatility and decline in traditional digital assets. Peter Smith, CEO of Blockchain.com, noted that the current growth trajectory of these markets mirrors the early, high-energy days of crypto adoption.

However, the transition is fraught with legal complexity. Companies are navigating a patchwork of federal derivatives oversight and state-level gambling laws. Michigan regulators recently forced Coinbase to halt event contract services after a federal judge denied the exchange's request for an injunction against state enforcement. Despite these hurdles, the financial incentive remains clear: Robinhood’s recent quarterly report revealed that event contracts generated $156 million, significantly outpacing its $100 million in cryptocurrency transaction revenue. As the market matures, firms are split between building proprietary operations or forming partnerships, such as the deal between Crypto.com and Robinhood, to distribute products to a wider American audience.
