Yakovenko shared his assessment on X following the Oct. 21 migration, suggesting that a simpler change to the existing vote program—utilizing the 'ag' state machine—would have achieved the desired outcome more efficiently than the current implementation. The transition replaces the legacy TowerBFT system with Alpenglow, which introduces direct voting and compact certificates. By removing validator votes from the chain, the network expects a significant drop in headline transaction counts, forcing analytics services to transition from reading instruction data to tracking certificate information in block footers.

Migration Mechanics and Validator Economics

The shift introduces a new fee structure, replacing individual transaction costs with a flat 0.8 SOL admission charge per epoch. This fee is burned, shifting the payment source from identity accounts to vote accounts. While the system targets 150-millisecond finality, Anza’s documentation warns that RPC nodes outside the primary validator set may experience latency, as they must often wait for certificates to appear in subsequent blocks. The migration requires validators to run specific software versions—such as Agave 4.3.2—while excluding support for Firedancer and Frankendancer during the initial handoff. Despite the technical friction, the Alpenglow proposal previously secured strong governance backing, passing with 98.27% support among votes cast in September.
