El-Sayed Turns Campaign Ad Into Defiant Stand Against Islamophobia

In a 30-second video released Monday, El-Sayed addresses the persistent smears regarding his background and alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. "My name is Abdul," he states in the ad. "It means servant. I pray every day." Rather than distancing himself from his faith, the former public health official frames his religious practice as a necessary antidote to the cynicism and lack of vision he claims currently paralyzes Washington. He argues that political rivals use these attacks as a distraction from the tangible economic hardships facing voters, from rising grocery costs to healthcare instability.

The candidate’s pivot comes as he faces pressure from both sides of the aisle. President Trump has repeatedly slandered El-Sayed, recently referring to him by his middle name, Mohamed, and labeling him a jihadist. Simultaneously, some establishment Democrats, including former Michigan party chair Lon Johnson, have accused him of extremism due to his vocal support for Palestinian rights and his critique of U.S. policy in Gaza. Despite these challenges, supporters like former school board official Mussab Ali note that the ad marks a rare moment in American politics where a candidate openly displays a prayer, choosing to double down on his identity rather than apologize for it.
