EPA Scales Back Protections Against Toxic Forever Chemicals

The EPA decision keeps maximum contaminant levels for two legacy compounds, PFOA and PFOS, but abandons standards for PFNA, PFHxS, GenX, and PFBS. These four substances currently serve as industrial replacements, making them the most likely sources of future contamination. Former senior EPA official Betsy Southerland warned that the move effectively ensures children will continue consuming these chemicals for at least another decade.

Beyond the specific chemical rollbacks, the agency is pushing back the compliance deadline for "polluter pays" cleanup costs from 2029 to 2031. Environmental advocates argue the shift violates the Safe Drinking Water Act, which contains explicit anti-backsliding provisions against weakening existing standards. Erik Olson of the Natural Resources Defense Council labeled the move illegal, noting that nearly half of the U.S. population already faces PFAS-contaminated water.

Industry lobbyists and water utilities reportedly drove the decision, a trend that critics view as a betrayal of public health. Environmental Working Group president Ken Cook stated that the policy forces ordinary citizens to bear the cost of pollution through increased sickness and disease. As the agency delays reporting rules and lowers enforcement thresholds, legal experts at the Southern Environmental Law Center emphasized that the administration’s focus on deregulation is actively prioritizing corporate interests over the safety of the public tap.
