Bitcoin Leveraged Positions Signal Potential Liquidation Risk

Bitfinex analysts report a 4.3% increase in futures open interest between October 12 and 15, even as the asset’s price declined. This shift suggests that short positions squeezed during recent rallies have been replaced by leveraged long positions. These traders are currently paying annualized funding rates of six to nine percent, echoing the market conditions that preceded two previous liquidation events earlier this October. Should the price breach the $79,821 support level, the firm anticipates a cascade of forced selling within an accumulation band of $77,600 to $80,400.

While Farside Investors data shows that net weekly outflows from Bitcoin ETFs dropped to $228.4 million—a significant decline from the previous week’s $678.9 million—demand remains insufficient to drive a breakout. Bitfinex estimates net 30-day apparent demand at negative 50,000 BTC. Meanwhile, HashKey researcher Tim Sun notes that while existing holders show little urgency to sell, the lack of new long-term institutional allocation leaves the price range-bound. Market participants are now looking toward upcoming Federal Reserve policy decisions and potential adjustments to MSCI index exclusions for treasury-heavy firms like MicroStrategy, which may introduce further volatility in the coming weeks.
