Google’s Quantum Breakthrough Raises Stakes for Bitcoin Security

The breakthrough centers on a technique dubbed magic state cultivation, which allows the Willow chip to reach 99.99% logical fidelity in specialized quantum states. These states are critical for running the complex calculations required for error-prone quantum operations. Previously, creating such reliable states consumed up to 95% of a quantum computer's capacity, serving as a primary bottleneck for scaling the technology. By subjecting initial states to repeated verification and discarding those that fail, researchers successfully purified the system to record levels of accuracy.

This development intersects with growing concerns regarding the security of legacy Bitcoin holdings. Blockchain analytics firm Glassnode estimates that roughly 6.04 million BTC—about 30.2% of the total mined supply—are currently exposed through public keys visible on the blockchain. While Google’s Willow chip contains only 105 qubits, the company’s own research suggests that a machine with fewer than 500,000 physical qubits could eventually compromise the elliptic curve cryptography that protects these assets.

In response to these long-term threats, industry players are beginning to map out a transition to quantum-resistant standards. Coinbase recently outlined potential migration strategies, emphasizing that a shift to new signature systems will require significant coordination across the decentralized network to manage transaction fees, wallet compatibility, and the issue of dormant coins. Although no immediate danger exists, the progress reported in Science signals that the timeline for post-quantum security upgrades is moving from theoretical debate to active technical planning.
