Larry Fink warns data center moratorium could trigger recession

Fink argued that the rapid buildout of computing infrastructure—encompassing buildings, power supplies, and specialized hardware—serves as a primary engine for current economic activity. He dismissed public concerns regarding environmental impact and energy costs as largely misinformed, emphasizing that the sector provides essential employment and technological advancement. Moody’s projects that U.S. data center spending could reach $700 billion in 2026, with cumulative investments potentially climbing toward $2.4 trillion by 2030.

Beyond the construction debate, Fink expressed alarm over the U.S. national debt, which hit $40 trillion in 2026. He warned that aggressive federal borrowing creates a "crowding out" effect, forcing private companies to compete for capital at a time when they require significant financing for AI expansion. Fink’s comments arrived alongside BlackRock’s third-quarter earnings report, which revealed $205 billion in net inflows and $15.5 trillion in total assets under management, underscoring the firm's deep integration into global capital markets.
