Bernie Sanders Calls for Halt to AI Data Center Expansion

In a social media address, the Vermont independent argued that the rapid build-out of infrastructure for AI serves the interests of billionaires like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Peter Thiel while threatening the economic stability of working families. Sanders highlighted projections from tech leaders, including Bill Gates, who have suggested that automation could eventually render human labor largely unnecessary. He questioned the social cost of a future defined by AI-driven isolation, where children increasingly rely on algorithms for emotional support rather than human connection.

The push for a federal pause aligns with growing local resistance. In Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel and gubernatorial candidate Anthony Hudson have publicly challenged the development of a 2.2-million-square-foot data center in Saline Township. Critics point to the strain these projects place on already fragile power grids and their massive demand for local water resources. This movement follows a recent appeal from over 230 environmental groups, including Food and Water Watch, which have formally demanded a halt to new data center construction to address climate and infrastructure concerns.
