Air Force Major Held in Solitary Confinement After Criticizing Trump

Watson was arrested on July 1 on the steps of the U.S. Capitol while holding a sign demanding the president's removal. Prosecutors allege he violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which restricts political activity by service members, by criticizing military actions in Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela. Following his arrest, he was moved from a military base to a Maryland county jail, where he remains isolated.

Defense attorney Christopher Mutimer described the conditions as cruel, noting that Watson spends his days in total isolation with the lights kept on continuously. During a September 18 preliminary hearing, defense counsel Cody Harnish challenged the necessity of such detention, noting that individuals accused of violent crimes often receive less restrictive pretrial treatment. Harnish also cited the unusually rapid denial of Watson’s request to resign his commission as evidence of potential political interference from senior Pentagon officials.

Rachel VanLandingham, a former Air Force judge advocate and law professor, characterized the confinement as a blatant violation of military law, which forbids pretrial restraint exceeding what is strictly necessary to ensure a defendant's presence at trial. Critics suggest the harsh measures are intended to silence dissent within the ranks, marking a shift in how the current administration manages military personnel who challenge its authority.
