Dormant Bitcoin Whale Moves $378 Million Amid Market Price Pressure

The assets, originally acquired in March 2020 for $40.8 million, have appreciated roughly 9.3 times in value. Blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain tracked the funds as they were divided into four 1,000 BTC tranches and one final segment of 582 BTC. While the wallet had remained largely inactive for years, on-chain records show a minor transaction of 0.009 BTC in August 2024, indicating the address was not entirely abandoned. As of now, the destination wallets remain unidentified, and there is no confirmation that the coins have been liquidated on any exchange.

This movement coincides with a period of broader market anxiety. Bitcoin is currently testing support near $83,000, facing headwinds from macroeconomic factors including a strengthening U.S. dollar and rising bond yields. Analysts at CryptoQuant have highlighted a sustained negative Coinbase Premium Index, suggesting that institutional participants in the U.S. are exerting selling pressure. While large-scale transfers from legacy wallets—including recent activity from government-linked accounts and mining firm MARA Holdings—often trigger market jitters, these on-chain events do not inherently confirm an intent to sell, as the assets may simply be moving into new custody or reorganization structures.
