Aptos Deploys Encrypted Mempool to Counter MEV Exploits

The new system allows users to opt into encryption for individual transactions, effectively masking the smart contract functions and asset data while orders remain in the mempool. By encrypting payloads before they reach the network, Aptos aims to neutralize frontrunning and sandwich attacks—exploits where bots intercept and manipulate pending trades for profit. Unlike alternative solutions that rely on external committees, the Aptos implementation utilizes the existing validator set to collectively decrypt and execute instructions only after block consensus is reached.

Adopting this privacy layer comes with added costs. Users must pay a minimum gas price of 200 octas per unit—double the standard base fee—plus a 375-unit surcharge for the decryption process. In performance testing with 50 nodes, the protocol added approximately 20 milliseconds of latency per block. The feature is currently integrated into the Petra wallet and the Decibel futures exchange, with developer support available via the version 7.0.0 TypeScript SDK.

The timing of the release coincides with increased industry scrutiny regarding automated exploitation. Analytics from Bitquery recently detailed millions of sandwich attacks on the Solana network, highlighting the scale of value extraction targeting retail users. While Aptos frames the Encrypted Mempool as a vital tool for institutional traders and developers, the market response has been muted; APT traded at $0.7995 following the announcement, struggling to maintain its technical support levels.
