The investigation centers on Keisuke Tanaka, president of the staffing firm Weather, and Yusuke Shibuya, who allegedly acted as an intermediary. Police believe the group used Weather’s corporate account in Izumisano, Osaka, as a primary destination for money siphoned from approximately 30 victims across 15 prefectures. Investigators allege the suspects charged a 1% commission for converting the illicit cash into digital assets like Bitcoin and USDT, which were then transferred back to the criminal organizations behind the initial scams.
While the current arrests focus on a specific 4.4 million yen transaction from February 16, 2024, the scope of the inquiry covers a wider two-month window. Between February and March 2024, the group reportedly processed the full 91 million yen. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the National Police Agency’s cybercrime division are now examining whether the company’s business structure was systematically repurposed to facilitate these financial crimes. No formal charges have been finalized, and the suspects' responses to the allegations remain undisclosed.
