A Global Wave of Youth-Led Protests Challenges Economic Stagnation

In France, over 250,000 demonstrators have taken to the streets, with students spearheading the movement against proposed education cuts in the 2027 national budget. Clémence Guetté of the France Unbowed party described the unrest as an attempt to dismantle an aging status quo. While the French government faces calls for the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron, the sentiment has crossed borders, finding resonance in India, Spain, Chile, and Belgium.

In India, the Generation Z-led Cockroach Janta Party has moved beyond local grievances regarding exam integrity to challenge the national Election Commission, following the mass removal of 130 million names from voter rolls. Meanwhile, in Spain, the death of 87-year-old María del Carmen Abascal Martín after her eviction has ignited a national housing justice movement. Thousands now occupy public spaces in Madrid and Barcelona, demanding protections as rents continue to climb.

Authorities in Santiago, Chile, have responded to student-led marches against budget cuts with water cannons and tear gas, leading to at least 17 arrests. In Europe, students in Liège, Rome, and Turin have adopted similar tactics, citing the French unrest as a direct inspiration for their own occupations and walkouts. These disparate movements share a common frustration: a lack of affordable housing, limited employment prospects, and a belief that the streets are the only remaining venue for political change.
