Argentina Launches Citizenship by Investment Program

The new framework allows applicants to bypass the standard two-year residency requirement through two primary channels: a $350,000 non-refundable contribution to the National Treasury or an $800,000 investment in a specialized government bond. Spouses and children can be included as dependents, provided they meet additional financial contributions ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. To mitigate concerns regarding transparency, all capital must transit through institutions authorized by the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic, with applicants facing rigorous background, security, and source-of-funds vetting.

This policy arrives as other nations debate the merits of similar schemes. While countries like Spain have moved to suspend programs due to domestic concerns over real estate inflation and money laundering, others like New Zealand have sought to revitalize their offerings. Argentina’s program, rooted in a 2025 decree, aligns with the broader pro-market agenda of the current government. Since taking office in late 2023, Milei has prioritized fiscal austerity and the deregulation of trade, a strategy that has seen the nation's sovereign risk premium drop from over 2,000 basis points to approximately 500.
