Murder of Okinawan Woman Reignites Demands for US Base Removal

Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was taken into custody Sunday following the death of 39-year-old Anna Yagi. Police report the victim died of asphyxiation at the Naminoue Crustal Hotel. While Ballard denies the allegations, surveillance footage reportedly shows a man matching his description leaving the scene with the victim’s belongings. The incident has drawn immediate condemnation from Japanese officials, including Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who demanded strict disciplinary action and a full investigation.

Okinawa Governor Genta Koja described the crime as unforgivable, noting that previous promises of reform from the American military have failed to curb violence against civilians. For many residents, the event is not an isolated tragedy but a recurring grievance in a prefecture that hosts 70% of US military bases in Japan. Activists and local leaders, including former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, argue that the presence of the Marines no longer serves the interests of local security, citing a decades-long history of criminal incidents and environmental hazards. As public anxiety deepens, the movement to restrict the scope of US operations or force a total withdrawal of the bases is gaining significant political momentum.
