The 100-Year Life: Why UK Investors Are Rethinking Retirement

The 100-Year Life: Why UK Investors Are Rethinking Retirement

The survey of 5,672 individuals with at least £2,000 in investable assets reveals a distinct psychological disconnect: 72 percent of respondents feel an average of nine years younger than their chronological age. While this outlook promotes vitality, experts warn it often creates a barrier to realistic financial preparation. The data suggests that many still view retirement as a static event rather than a multi-decade transition requiring adaptive strategies.

Financial discipline among this demographic is increasingly tied to personal purpose rather than simple accumulation. Fifty-seven percent of those surveyed cite a clear sense of purpose as their primary motivator for saving, with nearly a third prioritizing local community involvement and social connection. Michelle Holgate, director at RBC Brewin Dolphin, emphasizes that treating retirement as a cliff-edge moment is an outdated assumption. Instead, early, holistic planning is essential to ensure that the reality of a 100-year life remains sustainable and fulfilling.
