Appellate Court Halts Execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee

The stay of execution, issued by Judges Jane Stranch and Karen Moore, centers on legal arguments regarding the extreme childhood trauma Pike endured. Clinical psychologist Dr. Bethany Brand characterized the abuse Pike suffered—spanning from early childhood through her arrest at age 18—as severe and almost impossible to quantify. Pike’s defense team argues that the state’s recent concession regarding the veracity of her history of sexual abuse undermines the foundation of her previous court proceedings.

While the 6th Circuit has paused the process, the legal battle remains fluid. Republican Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti’s office has signaled its intent to challenge the stay, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the execution to proceed. Pike, now 50, was convicted for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Her attorneys, Stephen Ferrell, Kelly Gleason, and Randy Spivey, maintain that the woman currently incarcerated is a remorseful individual who has undergone significant personal growth, arguing that executing someone for actions committed as an 18-year-old with severe, untreated mental health struggles fails to address the complexities of the case.
