PhRMA Taps Former House Leader Eric Cantor to Lead Lobbying Arm

The appointment of Cantor, who represented Virginia in Congress from 2001 to 2014, signals a defensive shift for the pharmaceutical industry. PhRMA recently funneled a record $38 million into lobbying efforts to maintain influence on Capitol Hill, even as KFF polling indicates that nearly three-quarters of Americans want the government to act on drug affordability.

Critics view the selection as a calculated move to secure a seasoned operative against reform. Peter Maybarduk of Public Citizen described the former congressman as an experienced "reverse Robin Hood" who has long prioritized corporate interests over working families. During his time in office, Cantor accepted approximately $900,000 from the pharmaceutical sector, consistently opposing legislation that would have allowed for drug importation or federal price negotiations for Medicare recipients.
