Binance takes $100M stake in Circle to accelerate USDC adoption

Binance takes $100M stake in Circle to accelerate USDC adoption

The agreement, finalized on September 17, deepens the financial ties between the two entities, with Binance gaining voting rights alongside strict limitations on selling or hedging its new equity for two years. Under the deal, Circle will provide monthly incentives to Binance tied to USDC balances held through its modular wallet infrastructure. In exchange, the exchange will actively promote the stablecoin across its platform.

This strategic alignment builds on a relationship that has already transformed Binance into a major hub for USDC liquidity. Since their initial collaboration in late 2024, the number of USDC-quoted spot markets on the exchange has surged from 140 to 329. Monthly trading volumes for the asset have similarly spiked, climbing from a previous range of $20 billion to $40 billion to over $80 billion in recent months.

Despite this growth, USDC faces a significant gap in the stablecoin hierarchy. As of late September, USDC maintained a market capitalization of roughly $75 billion, while Tether’s USDT remained the clear leader with a valuation exceeding $183 billion. Market analysts suggest that while the Binance partnership grants Circle a vital distribution channel, shifting user behavior in international markets remains a difficult challenge given the entrenched liquidity and network effects surrounding Tether.
