Why Affluent Investors Still Prefer Humans Over AI

The report, titled The Human-AI Advantage: A Global Affluent Report 2026, reveals a distinct hierarchy in how wealthy individuals utilize machine intelligence. AI functions primarily as an early-stage research engine for generating ideas, exploring complex scenarios, and digesting data. However, at the point of execution, only 12 percent of investors view AI as the most influential factor. In contrast, 62 percent rely on financial professionals and institutions to validate ideas and identify potential blind spots.

Willem Sels, global CIO at HSBC, suggests that AI has graduated from a futuristic concept to a standard utility for the affluent. Despite this ubiquity, the appetite for a hybrid model is clear: half of all surveyed investors prefer a decision-making process that combines AI-driven research with human guidance. Whether they use machines to filter options before consulting an advisor, or rely on advisors who leverage AI tools, the demand for personal context remains paramount. As wealth levels rise, this preference for professional human oversight intensifies, underscoring that while AI can process vast amounts of data, it has yet to replace the necessity of human judgment in wealth management.
