Absa Launches Institutional Crypto Custody Service in South Africa

The new platform provides a regulated environment for corporate and institutional clients to safeguard digital assets and manage private keys. By integrating Ripple’s custody technology, Absa aims to offer a service that mirrors the security and governance standards of traditional financial assets. Robyn Lawson, head of digital product for custody at Absa CIB, noted that the system utilizes deterministic key derivation and secure hardware environments to prevent single points of failure, ensuring that internal controls remain robust.

Reece Merrick, Ripple’s managing director for the Middle East and Africa, described the September 21 rollout as a significant milestone for the region’s digital asset infrastructure. While the bank has not disclosed specific fees, asset lists, or initial client names, the service is explicitly positioned for institutional use rather than retail trading. This launch comes as South African regulators continue to refine the national framework for digital assets, with the National Treasury currently reviewing proposals regarding cross-border crypto transactions. The bank plans to expand the platform's capabilities iteratively, responding to evolving customer demand and the shifting regulatory landscape.
