Global Deforestation Targets Missed at Decade Halfway Point

The 2025 Forest Declaration Assessment reveals that 8.1 million hectares of forest were permanently lost in 2024. Primary tropical forests accounted for 6.73 million hectares of this total, triggering the release of 3.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases. Even more concerning, destruction within Key Biodiversity Areas surged by 47% compared to the previous year, placing irreplaceable habitats under immediate threat.

Structural imbalances continue to undermine conservation efforts. Financial incentives are heavily skewed, with harmful subsidies outpacing green investments by more than 200:1. While restoration projects now cover at least 10.6 million hectares, experts warn that data fragmentation makes it impossible to confirm if recovery is happening at the scale required to avert climate catastrophe. With COP30 approaching in Belém, Brazil, researchers emphasize that the focus must shift from setting ambitious pledges to implementing rigorous, inclusive regulatory frameworks that account for the real cost of deforestation.
