The roadmap marks a transition for Ethereum, integrating post-quantum security as a central delivery commitment rather than an auxiliary research project. While the Foundation acknowledges that most current projections place the threat of cryptographically relevant quantum computers further into the future, the 2029 date is set as an aggressive baseline for planning. This strategy remains subject to a formal reassessment in January 2027, when external experts will evaluate the pace of quantum development to determine if the timeline requires adjustment.

Central to this evolution is the Hegotá upgrade, which will introduce Frame Transactions via EIP-8141. These programmable frames decouple transaction validation, gas payments, and authorization logic from the existing signature model. By allowing accounts to define their own validation rules, users can adopt signature schemes that are resistant to quantum decryption without requiring network-wide hard forks for every cryptographic standard update. Alongside these changes, the Foundation is advancing zkEVM integration through EIP-8025, which introduces optional execution proofs. This staged rollout allows developers to test verification and networking on the live mainnet before the network shifts toward mandatory succinct proofs in later development cycles.
