Lemon Exits Brazil as Licensing Costs Outpace Local Revenue

Lemon confirmed it will cease all Brazilian services by October 16, with card payment processing ending as early as September 30. The decision follows the February implementation of Brazil’s framework for virtual-asset service providers, which mandates a strict licensing process with an October 30 deadline. Rather than committing the capital necessary to comply with these rules, the firm is redirecting its resources toward Argentina, Peru, and Colombia.

While smaller players like Coinext and Digitra have also exited or scaled back, larger firms continue to navigate the new regulatory environment. Binance has secured official approval, and Ripple is currently pursuing a license to support its stablecoin expansion. For Lemon, however, the 15,000 active accounts in Brazil could not justify the mounting compliance costs. The company stated that the current requirements effectively expel firms eager to innovate, prompting a pivot toward markets where its existing user base and licensing status offer a more stable foundation for growth. Customers in Brazil are now being urged to clear their balances before the platform’s final shutdown.
