Global Backlash Follows Trump’s Racist Tirade Against Somali Community

Representative Ilhan Omar responded in a New York Times op-ed, framing the president’s rhetoric as a desperate attempt to distract from his failing policy agenda. She defended her community by highlighting the professional contributions of Somali Americans, noting that over 90% of those living in Minnesota are citizens by birth or naturalization.

Lawmakers and local leaders echoed her sentiment. Representative Chuy García, speaking for the Congressional Progressive Caucus, labeled the comments "unacceptable and un-American," warning that such inflammatory language puts the physical safety of Somali families at risk. Minnesota state Senator Omar Fateh underscored the tangible danger, noting that local mosques and campaign offices have already become targets for harassment. The condemnation extended overseas, where residents in Mogadishu described the president's repeated derogatory characterizations as intolerable.
