S&P Global Acquires Blockchain Security Firm OpenZeppelin

OpenZeppelin will operate as a distinct business unit under its current name, with CEO Demian Brener reporting to S&P Global Ratings President Yann Le Pallec. The firm, founded in 2015, brings a significant track record to the table, having conducted over 900 security engagements and developed an open-source contracts library that has supported more than $37 trillion in transferred value. Crucially, the company has committed to keeping its existing open-source tools and libraries free and publicly accessible.

This transaction follows S&P Global’s recent $110 million investment in crypto market data provider Kaiko. By combining OpenZeppelin’s auditing and security infrastructure with its own data and benchmarks, S&P Global aims to establish a more transparent risk assessment framework for financial institutions migrating to blockchain networks. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the company noted that the acquisition is not expected to materially impact its overall financial results.
