Preventable Loss: Texas Abortion Ban Linked to Another Maternal Death

Walker, who suffered from severe hypertension and recurring seizures, explicitly asked doctors at Methodist Hospital Northeast in San Antonio to terminate her pregnancy in October 2024. Fearing a repeat of a previous stillbirth, she sought intervention that medical experts later confirmed was standard practice. Instead, staff dismissed her concerns, failing to offer the life-saving procedure despite internal records acknowledging she was at high risk of clinical deterioration.

More than a dozen OB/GYNs who reviewed the case concurred that the outcome was entirely preventable. Under Texas law, providers face up to 99 years in prison for performing abortions, creating a chilling effect that persists even when a patient's life is in jeopardy. Representative Judy Chu, author of the Women's Health Protection Act, condemned the legislative landscape that leaves women vulnerable. While Texas lawmakers recently adjusted statutes to broaden medical exceptions, healthcare professionals warn that the underlying fear of prosecution continues to discourage hospitals from providing necessary, life-saving care.
