Gaza Building Collapse Kills 21 as Housing Crisis Reaches Breaking Point

More than 10 families were residing in the multi-story structure, which had been weakened by previous Israeli airstrikes and further compromised by recent autumn rains. Survivors told reporters they remained in the hazardous building only because they had no other shelter options. Alessandro Mrakic, head of the United Nations Development Program’s Gaza office, warned that approximately 400 similarly damaged buildings face imminent collapse as winter approaches.

Rescue efforts are currently being conducted largely by hand. Israeli authorities continue to restrict the entry of heavy machinery, fuel, and specialized equipment, citing security concerns regarding Hamas. Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN humanitarian coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territories, issued an urgent appeal for the immediate approval of equipment and supplies, noting that the status quo forces families to risk their lives daily simply to find a place to sleep. Since October 2023, over 90% of Gaza's housing stock has been destroyed or damaged, leaving the displaced population in a cycle of precarious living conditions.
