Marginalized Turks Face Uncertain Future as Erdogan Secures Third Term

The 69-year-old leader, who defeated social democrat Kemal Kilicdaroglu, enters his third term facing a nation strained by historic inflation and the aftermath of devastating earthquakes. While supporters cheered in Istanbul, the atmosphere among marginalized communities remained grim. Ardelan Mese, a cafe owner in the Kurdish-majority city of Diyarbakir, described the election outcome as a matter of life and death, reflecting widespread concern that the government will intensify its long-standing crackdown on Kurdish political and cultural expression.

Civil society figures warn that the consolidation of power leaves little room for dissent. Journalist Murat Celikkan, founder of Amnesty International Turkey, noted that the state frequently utilizes anti-terror laws to silence opposition and criminalize peaceful protest. This atmosphere of fear is mirrored by the LGBTQ+ community, which became a primary target of Erdogan's campaign rhetoric. Following his victory speech, in which he vowed to prevent the infiltration of gay individuals into society, activists reported feeling increasingly unsafe. Despite the escalating hostility, some, like 20-year-old student Ilker Erdogan, maintain a defiant stance, asserting that their existence as Turkish citizens cannot be erased by political intimidation.
